Dowry cry over woman's suicide

A 24-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan of her home in east Delhi's Harsh Vihar area on Saturday.

However, her family members have alleged that she was killed by her in-laws for dowry. Pooja Singh was found hanging from the ceiling fan by her husband Bhoop Singh. The body was sent to GTB hospital for postmortem. Police said no suicide note was recovered from the spot.

Pooja's family members, including her brother Dinesh and father Asaram, alleged that the Bhoop Singh and his family has been harassing Pooja for dowry since their marriage on May 2 last year.

Dinesh said he suspected the in-laws as Pooja had injury marks on her body and face. Police said that the reason of the death can be ascertained only after the postmortem.

The husband and other members of the family are being questioned.

Police have sought inquiry by a sub-divisional magistrate. A case under section 498 of IPC (harrasment for dowry) has been registered. Neither the husband nor any of his family members has been arrested.
